Cooler Cooking This Summer

April 15, 2010

The warm kitchen that seemed so inviting when there was snow on the ground can easily become a blast furnace in My Town’s summer. The touch of serendipity is that quite a few of the tricks to keeping a kitchen cooler in warm weather are also energy savers that help the environment as well. Sometimes you really can kill two birds with one stone.

Energy saving small appliances such as electric frying pans, slo-cookers, and toaster ovens can be used to cook entries instead of firing up your large range top or oven.

Microwave ovens and pressure cookers can cook a meal quickly, using a reduced amount of energy and saving considerable time as well. Use them whenever possible.

Vegetables cook more quickly if they are cut into little pieces. Less cooking time translates to less energy use and a more comfortable kitchen.

Foods will cook faster and more efficiently if you put lids on the pans and make sure that the burner size matches.

The kitchen stays more comfortable if you preheat the oven only when the recipe calls for it.

Heating a second dish in your oven simultaneously doubles your efficiency.

Opening the oven door unnecessarily can cause the cooking temperature to fall by 50°F (25°C) or more. It is less wasteful to check progress by using the oven window.

Use the dishwasher only with a full load and let the contents air-dry naturally.
